On May 10, 2017, after a two and a half week trial in the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the jury returned a verdict in favor of retired Richland County Sheriff's Detective Charles Metcalf. Detective Metcalf was represented by Attorney Michael M. Heimlich.
